A timer that follows the actual competition rules
The timing in Cubist is built to World Cube Association standards rather than approximating them. That matters more than it sounds.
Inspection is 15 seconds. Start your solve after 15.00 and before 17.00 and the result carries a +2 penalty. Start after 17.00 and it's a DNF. Cubist implements those boundaries exactly, to the centisecond, because the difference between 15.00 and 15.03 is the difference between a legal solve and a penalized one — and if your practice timer is lenient about it, you will learn a habit that costs you at your first competition.
Averages work the way they do in competition too. Cubist calculates ao5 and ao12 by dropping the best and worst solves before averaging the rest, and mo3 as a straight mean. A session that shows your ao5 rather than your single best is telling you something honest about your consistency.
Scrambles are generated for all 17 WCA events, not just the 3x3 — so if you branch into 2x2, 4x4, Pyraminx, or one-handed, the scrambles you practice on are the real thing.
What does +2 mean on a cube timer?
A +2 is a two-second penalty added to your recorded time. It applies when you start the solve between 15.00 and 17.00 seconds of inspection, or when the cube finishes within one 45-degree turn of solved. Past 17.00 seconds of inspection, the solve is recorded as DNF — did not finish — and counts as your worst result in an average.
Seeing the next move instead of reading it
The part that changes how learning feels is the rendered cube.
Tutorials in Cubist don't hand you a string of notation and hope. The cube is drawn on screen in 3D, and the next move is shown on it. You turn your physical cube to match. If you turn the wrong way — the direction everyone gets wrong for the first fifty repetitions of a given algorithm — the app flags it in place, without stopping the drill and sending you back to the beginning.
That single design choice is why the guided path works for people who have bounced off algorithm lists before. F2L, OLL, and PLL stop being vocabulary to memorize and become moves you can see landing in a position you recognize. You learn the case, not the string.
The path is ordered: from the beginner method you already have, through CFOP's four stages, with each new case introduced where it actually comes up in a solve rather than in alphabetical batches.
Times that go somewhere
Recording a solve and dropping it into a private log is fine, but it answers only half the question. The other half is comparative: is this time good? Good compared to whom?
Cubist posts results to global, regional, and friends leaderboards. The friends board is the one most people end up using daily — a small group of people at roughly your level makes a 2-second improvement legible in a way that a global top-100 list never will. Regional rankings sit in between, and the global board is there when you want to see the ceiling.
Leaderboard results are verified server-side, so the numbers on the board reflect solves that actually happened under the timer's rules.
